Researchers discover why humans began walking upright

Most of us walk and carry items in our hands every day. These are seemingly simple activities that the majority of us don’t question. But an international team of researchers, including Brian Richmond at the George Washington University, have discovered that human bipedalism, or walking upright, may have originated millions of years ago as an adaptation to carrying scarce, high-quality resources. This latest research was published in this month’s “Current Biology.”

The team of researchers from the U.S., England, Japan and Portugal investigated the behavior of modern-day chimpanzees as they competed for food resources, in an effort to understand what ecological settings would lead a large ape – one that resembles the 6 million-year old ancestor we shared in common with living chimpanzees – to walk on two legs.

“These chimpanzees provide a model of the ecological conditions under which our earliest ancestors might have begun walking on two legs,” said Dr. Richmond, an author of the study and associate professor of anthropology at GW’s Columbian College of Arts and Sciences. “Something as simple as carrying?an activity we engage in every day?may have, under the right conditions, led to upright walking and set our ancestors on a path apart from other apes that ultimately led to the origin of our kind.”

The research findings suggest that chimpanzees switch to moving on two limbs instead of four in situations where they need to monopolize a resource, usually because it may not occur in plentiful supply in their habitat, making it hard for them to predict when they will see it again. Standing on two legs allows them to carry much more at one time because it frees up their hands. Over time, intense bursts of bipedal activity may have led to anatomical changes that in turn became the subject of natural selection where competition for food or other resources was strong.

Two studies were conducted by the team in Guinea. The first study was in Kyoto University’s “outdoor laboratory” in a natural clearing in Bossou Forest. Researchers allowed the wild chimpanzees access to different combinations of two different types of nut?the oil palm nut, which is naturally widely available, and the coula nut, which is not. The chimpanzees’ behavior was monitored in three situations: (a) when only oil palm nuts were available, (b) when a small number of coula nuts was available, and (c) when coula nuts were the majority available resource.

When the rare coula nuts were available only in small numbers, the chimpanzees transported more at one time. Similarly, when coula nuts were the majority resource, the chimpanzees ignored the oil palm nuts altogether. The chimpanzees regarded the coula nuts as a more highly-prized resource and competed for them more intensely.

In such high-competition settings, the frequency of cases in which the chimpanzees started moving on two legs increased by a factor of four. Not only was it obvious that bipedal movement allowed them to carry more of this precious resource, but also that they were actively trying to move as much as they could in one go by using everything available ? even their mouths.

The second study, by Kimberley Hockings of Oxford Brookes University was a 14-month study of Bossou chimpanzees crop-raiding, a situation in which they have to compete for rare and unpredictable resources. Here, 35 percent of the chimpanzees’ activity involved some sort of bipedal movement, and once again, this behavior appeared to be linked to a clear attempt to carry as much as possible at one time.

Security camera scans 36 million faces a second

A new surveillance camera system developed by Hitachi Kokusai Electric?can search through data on 36 million faces in one second, Tokyo video news site DigInfo TV reported Thursday.

The system detects a face from a regular photo or a surveillance video — such as those made on six pack pick-ups at the corner convenience store — and searches for it.

Search results appear instantaneously. Select a thumbnail image and the system will show its associated context in a surveillance video. Not the person who pilfered the chewing gum? Go to the next candidate.

“The high speed is achieved by detecting faces through image recognition when the footage from the camera is recorded and also by grouping similar faces,” a company representative told DigInfo.

To work, faces must be turned with 30 degrees of the camera and be 40 by 40 pixels in size.

Hitachi Kokusai Electric expects the technology to be attractive to companies with relative large surveillance systems, such as railroads, big box stores, and law enforcement agencies.

The system should be available for purchase in fiscal year 2013.

st-louis-realtor-dennis-norman-shadow-inventory-corelogicA report released this morning by CoreLogic shows that the current residential ?shadow? inventory as of January 2012 was 1.6 million units, equivalent to a 6-months? supply,? and approximately the same level last reported in October 2011.? The shadow inventory is down from a year ago though, when it was at 1.8 million units, or an 8-months? supply. Currently, the flow of new seriously delinquent (90 days or more) loans into the shadow inventory has been offset by the roughly equal flow of distressed sales (short and real estate owned), according to the report.

?Almost half of the shadow inventory is not yet in the foreclosure process,? said Mark Fleming, chief economist for CoreLogic. ?Shadow inventory also remains concentrated in states impacted by sharp price declines and states with long foreclosure timelines.?

This report from Corelogic pretty much paints the same picture as the RadarLogic report I wrote about earlier this week which said there were ?millions more? homes available for sale (or coming available) than what the existing home supply from the National Association of REALTORS shows.

CoreLogic estimates the current stock of properties in the shadow inventory, also known as pending supply, by calculating the number of distressed properties not currently listed on multiple listing services (MLSs) that are seriously delinquent, in foreclosure and real estate owned (REO) by lenders. Transition rates of ?delinquency to foreclosure? and ?foreclosure to REO? are used to identify the currently distressed non-listed properties most likely to become REO properties. Properties that are not yet delinquent, but may become delinquent in the future, are not included in the estimate of the current shadow inventory. Shadow inventory is typically not included in the official metrics of unsold inventory.

Report Highlights:

  • As of January 2012, shadow inventory remained at 1.6 million units, or 6-months? supply and represented half of the 3 million properties currently seriously delinquent, in foreclosure or REO.
  • Of the 1.6 million properties currently in the shadow inventory (Figures 1 and 2), 800,000 units are seriously delinquent (3.1-months? supply), 410,000 are in some stage of foreclosure (1.6-months? supply) and 400,000 are already in REO (1.6-months? supply).
  • Florida, California and Illinois account for more than a third of the shadow inventory. The top six states, which would also include New York, Texas and New Jersey, account for half of the shadow inventory.
  • The shadow inventory is approximately four times higher than its low point (380,000 properties) at the peak of the housing bubble in mid-2006.
  • Despite 3 million distressed sales since January 2009, the period when home prices were declining at their fastest rate, the shadow inventory in January 2012 is at the same level as January 2009.
  • The shadow inventory is approximately half of the size of all visible inventory listings. For every two homes available for sale, there is one home in the ?shadows? (Figure 3).
  • The segment of borrowers that were 60+ days delinquent in the past but were ?cured? and are now current on their payments is increasing. This figure was 7.2 percent in January 2012 (Figure 4), up from 5.7percent a year ago.
  • The total percent of borrowers who were ever 60+ days delinquent (irrespective of delinquency status today) increased to 15.5 percent in January 2012, up from 14.3 percent a year ago.
  • The highest concentration of shadow inventory is for loans with loan balances between $100,000 and $125,000 (Figure 5). More importantly while the overall supply of homes in the shadow inventory is declining versus a year ago, the declines are being driven by higher balance loans. For loans with balances of $75,000 or less, however, the shadow is still growing and is up 3 percent from a year ago.

Ohio governor creates panel on jobs for disabled – WKBN – 27 First …

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? Ohio Gov. John Kasich has signed an executive order to create a taskforce aimed at expanding job opportunities for the developmentally disabled.

The Monday order creating the Employment First Policy and Taskforce notes that less than 6 percent of adult service funding is used to place and support those with developmental disabilities in the workforce. It also says people with such disabilities have some of the highest unemployment and poverty rates

The group will be headed up by the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities. The panel also will include representatives of the state departments of education, mental health and job and family services and the commission for rehabilitation services.
